if the fork you buy is normally threaded then you can use a normal 1" headset, no? or even go for 1" ahead if that's what floats your boat.
not so sure about steerer sizing though. i can measure the steerer on my 60cm racing frame for you if that's any help.
how long is the head tube end to end? -
• #3
yeh it will have a normal 1" headset, the head tube is 205mm i think.
if you could measure your steerer that would be great.
-
• #4
threaded steerer length = Head tube length + Headset stack height
If that is your Gitane frame (62cm ish?), then you will be needing a looooong steerer. -
• #5
60 c-c, 62 c-t.
so as the headtube is 20.5 cm il need a 20.5 cm headtube at least?
-
• #6
yep - more likely you'll need 230-250mm steerer. Headsets take up from 25-45mm uusually. The lowest-stack options are Cris king + gripnut, or something else, (I think Tange.)

Snoops, I just bought one from here:
http://www.velokit.co.uk/cart_productdetails.asp?PRODUCTID=3411The cheapest place I could find new (i.e. uncut) and in-stock

oh that looks awesome, but what is that thing half way down the right leg of the fork??
i hope that is an anomaly in the image or something.

• #11
I'll let you know once I have it :P

• #12
looks like a good old fashioned lamp mounting boss!
-
• #13
So what is the steerer length on those sprint forks?
-
• #14
Well I'm pretty sure my LBS didn't even bother to cut the steerer (just added a few spacers into the headset) so I think it's still uncut. I'll give you a measurement tomorrow.

• #15
Thanks! How are they other than that? fairly light? What headset did you use use? is it a 1" steerer?
-
• #16
Yep, 1" Steerer. I looks pretty good. The dropouts look a bit cheap, but for £15 who gives a fuck.
If you intend on fitting a modern brake calliper onto it you may need to file the rear hole very slightly as I was unable to fit the fixing bolt into it...

did you get a chance to measure the steerer length? threaded length etc? thanks for your help with this!

Old thread revival I know but I'm in a similar situation and didn't want to start a new thread. Anyone seem any 700c forks, ideally chrome, with a steerer 230mm+ ? I've tried everywhere I can think of without luck.
Thanks in advance guys (and girls).

Mcc-tester has mentioned this a few times. But its better to have at least a slim spacer above the stem. Otherwise the stem clamp wil be trying to 'walk' the stem off the steerer. This prevented by the headset cap, but it is still not an ideal situation.
I cant see any reason to have spacers under the stem, other than to raise it for fit.
I tend to set everthing up. mark the total length, and cut. I then remove 0.5 - 1 mm more steerer with a metal file (also removing any sharpe edges). to allow the headset adjuster to push on the spacer.

If the steerer is cut too short what is the maximum gap you would have between the top of the steerer and the top of the stem and still regard it as safe / useable? Clearly this bears some relation to the size of the stem - the bigger the stem presumably the bigger the safe difference (because there will still be a big amount of contact between stem and steerer)? In my case the stem is 45mm.
I chopped the steerer on my 29er too short. Its still only 3 or 4 mm under the stem. But I consider it too short. I've been keeping an eye on it, and it seems fine (headset adjuster at constant torque etc.), but I'm still an idiot for doing it :(

Cheers Velo. You've cheered me up no end. my shortish steerer on my 29er has been bugging me. But it in fact looks to exactly like the pic on the link you posted. :)

just bought an old peugeot frame and need some forks
I know how they work on mountain bikes but I am not sure about road bikes
So I measure head tube and then I get stuck
Also how do I find out what diameter steerer tube I need?
cheers

Peugeot frame would be a 1" steerer.
http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/fork-steering-column-length-and-sizing
Ok quite a simple query i think, i have only really come into contact with 1 1/8 ahead fork and stem combos before my current and future builds so have little knowledge of threaded. basically i am wondering does the steerer tube length work in a similar way to threadless, how long roughly would i need in steerer tube for a 60cm frame with a fairly long headtube a la:
there are a few on ebay; one is 1 inch x 15.5cm, threaded section 3.8cm, and the other is 1 inch x 18cm, threaded section 4.1cm. they both are chrome and £20 starting bid, one eddy merckx and one gios, what do you reckon they are worth?
thankful for any help...
also anyone have a bb and headset suitable for this frame? french threaded, think it might be a bitch to find.
