BMX build question

  • I have a BMX in the shed loaded up with barely used top late 90's bits like G-sport wheels, demolition cranks, odyssey handlebars etc...

The frame was always too chunky. Its way heavy and looks shit.

I was keep yearning for a BMX to muck about on (mainly on the street) and am tempted to get myself a new frame which is lighter, has better geometry and isnt quite so ugly.

I was just wondering how feasible it is to put all my old parts (including 42 tooth chainring & normal ahead forks) onto a modern BMX frame, and also if I will be giggled at by kids for my retro parts

  • Most new school bmxs have integrated headsets but I'm sure your old crown race would still work fine. Due to modern weigh saving new forks would most likely have10mm drop-outs, so if you get frame and fork make sure you pick up 15mm ones to accommodate your old wheels. But if it weight saving your after then you might also consider replacing your wheels too.

Chances are also your running a US bottom bracket, a new frame would most likely take a Mid press BB or a euro BB. If you've 3 piece cranks then just pick up a new BB and you'll be fine.

  • As said above modern frames use integrated headsets but the crown races are the same.

You might have issues clearing the 42th sprocket since chain stays are pretty wide these days to accommodate for the fashion of running monster truck tyres, most frame manufactures specify what the largest sprocket size that can be run is.

Aaaannd yes you'll be giggled at by the kids who think a 30th sprocket is big and old-school
