Not sure, but the unofficial reason was that both the porn industry and Disney chose to release on VHS.
I had both (up to going to Uni 97-00) and my Betamax tapes lasted longer and didn't degrade/stretch like VHS did.
I'm so glad someone else said that before me. Not liking the Beatles is like 21st Century leprosy! I don't hate them, I just don't get the hype is all.
