Well, we recced (rode) the route a few times, and at least one of us had a GPS.
It's totally possible on SS bikes just don't use too big a gearing, something around 60-70 GI is fine, although you'll probably be walking up the big hills anyway. There are a few tricky bits but its mainly straight.
try and take some sort of map with you, whether it be print outs or something on an iphone or whatever - you'll appreciate it when you sat in a quiet country lane in Sussex wondering where the fuck you are.
