Instead of selling and sticking to gears, Andy, have you thought about dropping the gearing? You could sell your geared bike instead. :)

If your cartilage problem is really bad, I'd recommend staying off the bike for a while, anyway. (I know no-one ever does this--I didn't, either.) Do yoga/physio until you feel better. Good luck.
