  • or tourettes

Tourette's has a much higher incidence amongst the male population. [/giving Balki a tic-ing off]

  • ah so you're the London writer, I have used it to try and encourage my reluctant partner to ride...to no avail so far unfortunately. Its a good site.

There are a few Londoners on there, but I seem to be the most prolific, even though I don't post as much as I should. I feel your pain, my boyfriend doesn't 'do' bikes either, he does fortunately like beer though, so can be seen at some forum events..

    hehe

  • I think a women's sub-forum is a great idea! But then i think that any group showing enough support should be allowed as long as its beneficial to the community as a whole.
It will be up to each women individually wether they wanted to use it.
Saying that, i was a slightly dissapointed with the women only ride. Im not used to longer journeys and a relaxed ride like this seemed like a lot of fun; but its defintitely seemed to have been a major positive for the forum so not grudging!

  • The my bottle of snapple just told me that women blink twice as much as men.

Your syntax owes much to Homer.

  • Laner, check out the 'long rides are fun' threads. I recently did the Southend one and the pace was really relaxed, no-one got left behind (a few got 're-routed', but they had a garmin so found us in the end), was quite a few ladies on that one as well (ziska, kattiep, veevee, charlott83, stix), and it was a great ride.

  • I think Maria's (highly successful) efforts at helping push forward women-only racing show what can be done with a bit of focus, and some really good motivation. It's kind of supporting evidence for what the OP suggested.

  • I think it should just be an extra folder in the virtual filing system, rather than a 'no boys allowed' club.

    THIS.

No boys allowed is just silly. I would like to hear what they have to contribute to our discussions (Teapots!!! sniggers). That is not the reason for a sub-forum : to alienate people. Its about bringing specific information into a easy to find place.

  • Can I just be clear in saying that NO ONE has said it should be girls only.

    thank you.

  • I write for them.

Can I just butt in and claim #internetfame

I know! Mostly just jealous of how nice a day it was for brighton beach times, and how much fun you lot had!

Will be checking the long rides are fun to hopefully go on one soon.

  • laner, I am undoubtedly older, fatter and slower than you and yet I can manage forum rides. We need to encourage more women onto them to ensure civility and a decent pace.

That might be up for debate if/when we meet on a ride. Right now I lay claim to the slowest woman on a women's ride (two laden panniers might have something to do with it - lol).

I'd just like to say, I joined the women's rides because they were women-only and I felt more 'comfortable' as none of my family/friends ride and it get's a little lonely. However, I'll be happy to join one of the other rides in the future.

And to think I only joined this site to buy a frame..........

  • There we have it. Let's set up a women's sub-form as a gateway drug.

Get off it, Clive, and stop comparing yourself to Brad Wiggins. You're a strong rider (when not leaking).

don't worry about your speed unless it's advertised as a fast ride the rides are very slow and no one is left behind.

  • i'm for it. can't be schlepped to say all the things that have already been said well, especially by nhatt, will, digger, jayloo, vee. i say lets give it a go and see if it helps get more girls out on the roads, threads and pubs.

in no way do i want to 'only' get involved with women's stuff - there is plenty of evidence of that. but sometimes, yes. saturday was ace because it was only ladies on a long ride - a novelty that i would like to repeat. and sometimes too i want to have a conversation about riding bikes with a mooncup.

and i'm not from wigan. neither is will. pm me and i'll tell you his grubby little secret.

  • Like I've said before my only fear is that it becomes self segregating. Maybe my opinion is coloured by the loss of so many bods who I consider friends to polo and the polo forum and so believe this is going to happen everytime a subforum is created.
Increasing the level of female participation in cycling and this forum can only be good thing and something I'd hoped to see for a while.
Nhatt just do it and see what happens preferably before the good weather disappears so that a couple more rides/gatherings can be organised.

  • Like I've said before my only fear is that it becomes self segregating.

The most segregating thing is when indispensible members of this forum take it upon themselves to pack their bikes and swan off around the world for an elongated period.

  • I would like there to be women's sub-forum. It would definitely encourage me to post more on this forum and get more involved. Most of the thread I've seen on here that relate to anything to do with lady cycle descend into awful misogynistic 'jokes' within a few replies, making them absolutely pointless. It would be great to be able to have these discussions taken seriously.

Also, I think it would end up being a much more supportive and encouraging place, where women might feel more comfortable asking 'silly' questions.

I'd really like to come on another ladies ride too, but the last one knocked my confidence quite a bit :(

I'm sorry to hear that, how come?
actually, PM me if you want.

  • I fully support the idea of a female only sub-forum.

Its a sad event, but there can be positives out of it.

If a women only section increases the amount of females on this forum, it can't be a bad thing. Some of them will go to some of the drinks, and will blend in more and more with the main forum.

The misogyny on here, that is largely treated as being very funny, isn't. My sisters wouldn't find it so, and neither would my daughter. Sure, some women know what to expect on here, so its no big deal, but other women aren't prepared for it......They come on here, ask a few questions, then leave.....never to return. Of course, some will just say, that person should HTFU. I disagree. I can't stand male only company. Its unnatural in the world, unless living aboard an Attack Class nuclear submarine.

The present balance of males to females on this forum, and many other forums actually, is just plain sad. Others may love the blokeyness, but I find blokeyness to normally be the airing of the lower mentality. Yes, maybe funny sometimes, but not all the time.

Nhatt, I wish you and others like-minded, every success

  • Come to the football thread. Everybody gets abused in equal measures there

  • Although I don't think I'm really qualified to comment in here, I do support ladies sub section wholeheartedly.
