Aren't some chains more noisy than others though? Also, doesn't it make a racket when the chain's too tight?
Yes and yes, but the chain meshing onto* the sprocket is one of the things exciting the vibration, so the tooth profile can also make a difference.
*Demeshing off it really, as that's the bit that's in tension.
