just wanted to say, welcome to the Carlton Corsair owners' club
Retro geared bikes FTW, one might say
Apologies all, not fixed wheel or single speed, but I've noted an appreciation of retro geared rides on the forum, so...
Need to sell my lovely old geared Raleigh Competition to make way for a impulse buy of a Carlton Corsair tourer on the bay. I seemed to have reached critical mass on bikes, so it's a one in, one out policy sadly.
It's a 1982 Raleigh Competition, sized at 60cm with a very nice double butted 531 tubset, including forks and stays.
I've stripped this down 4 months ago and cleaned, lubed and polished every component, pivot, jockey wheel and bearing on the bike. Brixton cycles have put new bearings in the headset and BB.
Spec is:
531 DB frame. ST - CTT - 60cm. TT - CTC - 56.5cm. 100/126mm spacing. 74/74 degree HT & ST angles.
Campag Gran Sport Nuevo friction shifters, front & rear derailleurs.
SR Cranks, Seatpost, Stem (10cm) & SR Road Champ bars (40cm).
I've swapped out the Weinmann 605 brakes because as pretty as they were, I thought they were rubbish. I've fited new tektro r730 calipers and condor tektro branded aero brake levers.
Time atac pedals
fizik pave hp saddle
fizik bar tape.
6 speed screw on block - sachs, I think.
new cables and new 8 speed chain 2 months ago.I've added a new (to me) wheelset - campag record hubs on Mavic Open 4 CD rims. Little used Michellin Dynamic gumwalls (700 x 25c) also fitted.
I still have all the old componentry if you wanted to go retro.
I know it doesn't have the kudos of the niche brands or a special projects G.O.D frame, but it's a lovely ride that's been incredibly well maintained with upgrades where they matter.

I'm after £300 and am located in SW11 for test rides/inspections.
Thanks,
Col.

Thanks mate, I struggled with letting the Competition go as I've languished alot of TLC on it. It rides terrificially well, especially on the new wheels.
The Carlton means something has to go, so sadly the Raleigh is it!
Looking forward to lots of days out on the Carlton. It's this one. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=330346576628

holy cow you've only gone and got the same dang model & colour as me..
looks like it's in remarkable condition, I must say - really well cared for, the only thing it's calling out for is some nice pedals with christophe clips/straps.
when I first got mine I thought of going fixed/ss, even took the trouble to source a 27" rear wheel with double Airlite hub, but in the end I couldn't bring myself to do it. glad I didn't, would have been a travesty!
I'm slowly doing other things to it though - Brooks narrow B17 (dark brown) and matching leather bar tape, Cinelli stem and Ambrosio bars with a slight randonneur-style flair... am I trying to hard?

Not at all, mate.
Everything you've mentioned is on my list too!

reassuring. but crikey, if we ever go on a ride together, we'll have to ensure we are dressed very differently or people could get confused.

Hey, I just found this thread as I have recently acquired a '82 raleigh competition frame.
Spuds- looking to build up the bike, any advice on the wheels? I'm a bit confused, first project!
Do I have to go for 27" wheels or does this frame fit new wheels (I know I have to have 126mm hubs for it).Any help would be appreciated!

modern 700's are grand, with 126mm OLN.
Lovely bike - should never have sold mine!

Thanks.
My project just got easier though, when I picked up the frame (ebay collection) the guy had all of the original compag gears etc as well as the wheels with Normandy luxe competition hubs , very nice.
Kitting it out with Modolo breaks .
Now I don't know what to do about tyres, I like gatorskins but looking at the original tan wall tyres on the bike they look much better than black wall but I cant find any tans that are very good, they're all pretty heavy and poor performance.
Also dont know where to source a decent pair of 25.4mm handlebars there seems to be a massive shortage of them.If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
