Tales of cycling woe

  • Any cycling mishaps or rotten bad luck riding about? Get it off your chest here in the Tales of Woe therapy thread.

Today i got a flat on my commuter fixie on the way home from work. Limped it home then used my second bike (MTB) to ride up to Piccadilly Station as I didnt have time to fix the flat. On my way back from the station one of the cranks fell off my MTB and I had to limp this one home as well :(

Two bikes disabled in one day. I'm hoping to get back to actually completing my journeys again tomorrow.

  • Many years ago, I was out on a Sunday with my then clubamtes and me freehub disintegrated. Cub mates pushed me to the nearest village (this was before mobiles) called my old man who was non too chuffed at a 50 plus mile round trip to collect me. Was home well before the lunch and with barely 25 miles in my legs so took my mountainbike out for a spin on the towpaths. A farmer had trimmed the hedges and I didnt realise until too late and both tyres flat. Only had one spare, walked about 5 miles too a vilage and phone box and had to call my old man again for a 30 mile round trip to pick me up again. He was even less impressed second time round!

  • Indeed, bad luck. There are times when you wish you hadnt bothered taking the bike out but thankfully for the most part those days are rare and I couldnt swap the simple joy I get from riding for just jumping in a car and not bothering.

  • bruced, sounds like you need some general bike maintenance lessons

  • Locked up my bike in Angel for a gig the other night, didn't fancy my seat/seatpost's chances so took them into the venue. Afterwards, as I was tightening the seatpost bolt, it snapped in half. Had to ride back to Peckham with the seat just loosely attached and about 15cm too low. My legs really ached the next day.
Now I can't find the right bolt and really wish I had a second bike.
    Wah wah first-world problems etc.

  • this thread has all the potential to be the dullest ever, keep 'em coming

  • I used to enjoy frequenting a blossoming cycling forum that had an edge to it, but then it got very big, and suddenly hordes of the bland posted in their droves* :(

  • @ ade & BringMeMyFix

I'm sorry that this thread doesnt have the usual dynamism and wit you both seem to be accustomed to. If only all our lives and everything we said or aired could be so.

  • I`m a touch neurotic about the size of my calves.

  • bruced, sounds like you need some general bike maintenance lessons

"Just use a hammer. Fixes everything."

  • This thread is useless without pics, bring back draw your own collisions.

  • it was a hot summers day in 1991, i was 12 and my brother chad was 11. we got on our bikes and rode all the way from northampton to wickstead park where our grandparents used to take us. We were going to watch the skateboarders in the bowl. . We got there to find the concrete bowl had been filled in but we werent gonna let that ruin our trip so we climbed on the old train wreck and played in the park. after a while decided we better head back. About 5 minutes into the ride my brother had a puncure. Nothing to fix it with we ended up having to lock it up in a sainsburys car park and get our mom to pick it up later. So i had to give him a backie for fuck knows how many miles. We cut through a field on the way home and could see our town on the horizon. We were so thirsty. All we had was a single apple. I took a bite. It was the best apple i ever ate, i can still taste it now. We both shared that apple, and you know what...that day i loved my brother.
