    First, try persuasion by highlighting the benefits of fixed-gear riding. It's safer because you're relying on your legs, not a fallible mechanical part for braking, and those legs of yours don't grip less when it's wet, and you still have a front brake so you've got the same braking power, it's just that the rear brake is not visible - so it's not that you don't have a rear brake. Just because your Mum can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there (in effect).

    Then say, "But if you don't understand how it works and can't see the benefits, perhaps you'd like to spend £800 on a lovely new geared bike with a rear brake that you can see? Or perhaps I should give up cycling and do crack like all my mates?"
