• I found this on gumtree:

    http://www.gumtree.com/london/15/58421615.html

I wouldn’t keep it like this for long, new saddle, pedals, toe straps, bars, I just have a small student budget to go on and this is ready to ride.

What are people’s thoughts on these as a first complete bike?

    Thanks, Smudge

  • not looking good to be honest.
looks like a unipack/create but with huge clearances on the front

Not to sound stupid, but is clearance a bad thing at the front?

  • kind of, it will affect the handling a tad.
    just looks horrible.
    those bikes look horrible.
scour the classifieds on here and learn as you go. its the best way.

  • 1 brak no foot retention fail as well.

  • same as the ones some dude sells outside our shop on sundays....they look like they would die in the face if you touched them.....

  • Get a part-time job and get a bike that is safe and will last you.

    OR

Find a extra £50-80, hang around here long enough and you'll find a decent second hand bike. You might not even have to find the extra £50.

  • Yup, not a good bike. I wouldn't get this. Don't look to save money so early when you don't know what you're doing. Investing a little more will always stand you in good stead in the long run. The key is that cycling isn't 'cheap'. It's much better value for money than driving or public transport, but to get a decent cycling experience you want to spend some more to be happier.

Look around the forum a bit more and see the possibilities. Look at the Classifieds here in preference to Gumtree. See the 'Current Projects' thread, too, for what people are building. Good luck.

  • Thanks alot. I have more then that to spend, about 250 might stretch to 300, but im willing to upgrade parts over time. I just thought it seemed a little to cheap compaired to what ive seen else where.
    Thanks again

  • SIMPLICITY IS A MUST NOW DAYS

    great ad!

  • Buy cheap = buy twice.
Get the best bike you can afford, that way you won't spend a fortune on "upgrades" if you get on with cycling or you will get a decent price 2nd hand if you don't.

  • dude -
my first build cost me 175
    and it was actually sick.
got me from A to B (and quickly) for about a year - then i slowly built it up into an awesome ride.
just do a simple easy conversion, buy a simple old racer (raleigh or whatevs) on gumtree for 80 quid, get some decent wheels (mavic open pros are always way cheap on ebay - tough and legit), a new front brake (or set if you're running single speed), and maybe invest in a good crankset. DONE.
go see the boys at tokyo fixed and tell them how much money you have to spend and they'll take care of you with quality second-hand parts. BOOM.

  • ... or even just consider something like this if you've got £250 to spend:

    beautiful.
don't be sucked in by dudes selling shitty rides on gumtree - when a build costs £180 from someone who's looking to make a profit, there's no way they're worth investing in...

  • That harry quinn is only a frame.

  • go see the boys at tokyo fixed and tell them how much money you have to spend and they'll take care of you with quality second-hand parts. BOOM.

I think I might try and get down there this week, at least for a look around, cheers for the heads up.

  • oh yeah whoops... you're right on the frame only...
sorry! but you do get those deals
