Hey.
Friend of mine's broken his skewer thingy on the rear wheel. I've never seen one of these before myself, having only really used more modern quick release things,
it's the big thick bar on the right hand side, and his has split in two...
?The quick release system is just the same as used on more modern bikes (unless your talking about thru-axles on MTB's).
The "big thick bar" is the axle, you need an axle in the wheel for sure.

Your "friend" basically killed the hub.
You'd need a replacement axle, repack the bearings etc. Google fro a video how to deal with it. -

It's not like it's some sort of embarrassing body problem. In fact I'd love to have his bike, A 70's Raleigh Sprint, white with red trimming, absolutely lovely. I'll forward on. A good chance to see how inside the hub works, like I've said, never got further than having to thread a skewer through a new set of wheels myself.

Me neither, but hopefully someone will give you a better detailed advice on axle replacement anytime soon.

I live in Southsea and I have some hollow rear axles & bearings/bearing races. Yours for a drink -

Cheers dude for the offer, but we took a trip up to Cycle World and got one there, then did a bit of a disassemble / reconstruct in the garden.... Wheel's working again pretty well now, so we must have done something right!
Good to see someone local floating around here though!
Hey.
Friend of mine's broken his skewer thingy on the rear wheel. I've never seen one of these before myself, having only really used more modern quick release things, or the fact nothing 'touch wood' has happened...
I've pinched a photo, it's the big thick bar on the right hand side, and his has split in two...
Should he be worried... not worried.. quick cheap replacement?
excuse my ignorance on this, never really faffed with wheels or anything. cheers
