Question: They haven't put the bone in place and back together yet, should they have? Will the bone naturally try to align?

They can only put the bone together with a pin. Otherwise the two broken parts of bone will start to form a join naturally 'if' they are close enough and if you have the right physiology. Slings, clavicle rings etc.. only work in certain cases. After waiting for 6 months for my bone to join the doctors were still not able to confirm from the x-rays if there was a firm join so they decided to send me to have a hook-pin fitted. It turns out it was the correct decision because what they thought was bone forming a union on the x-ray turned out to be fibrous muscle. The process took 2 operations and 18 months which is pretty much the worst case scenario. Normally 3-4 months and you should be sorted.
