I don't like cycling with earphones in, I rely too much on tiny sounds to accompany my sight, especially when crazy nodders try to undertake me on the inside of a bus or something
I find that listening to an mp3 player with built in external speakers works a treat. I can hear the music, but can also hear everything else. It does also mean that peds hear me coming so don't step out into the streets without looking. And I think it scares people, as I could pass for one of them intimidating looking Yout who have music blaring out of their (stolen) phone.
Result
