Stiff/Creaking Cane Creek S2 Headset

I recently got a frame and fork off the forum fitted with a nearly new cane creak headset.
I had notised after a short ride that it was squeaking a fair bit, I then got home and found it was very stiff ( the bars would not swing around like bars do )

I did not touche it because I am no good with headsets and did not want to do anything wrong so took it to my new LBS and they said I was missing the upper crown in the headset. I e-mailed the dude I got it off and told him he said he fitted what he got sent when he ordered the headset. He said just tightening the top nut stops the noise, but when I did that is just became even stiffer and the noise when I turned the bar was even louder!

I looked on the Cane Creek website about the stems and it gave me list of what is in the box, and no upper crown was to be listed!

Can anyone help?

I suggest you source an upper crown for this headset, assuming your LBS is correct.

I am thinking that now, is it easy enough to get them on the net?

I've only ever bought headsets as a whole, not parts for them.
You'll probably need to replace the whole lot anyway if it's been run in such a weird way.

I thought Cane Creek headsets were menat to creak, it's in the name innit.

Well the headset does not need a top crown because it does not come with one, that is what I am confused about, what I might do it get my LBS to take it out and fit it again with a upper crown anyway...

I think its the crown race of some sort but the upper one?
If it does not need one and is still making a noise could it be a bad installation?

Do you know, or does anyone know where I can source a 1" upper crown?
I also assume they are not all generic?
You need one to fit the bearings?

My LBS does not have one, they will tell me when they do but they are busy enough so they said it would be best if I got one..
