Does anyone know of anyone that's been successful at just taking it back?
I don't know about just taking it back, people have got them back by some of the following methods. You have a number of options.
If you have proof, such as proof of purchase and the frame number, then I would see if there are police around or call them.
If there aren't police around then you could wait for someone to buy it and then accost them with your proof and call the police. It's a bit cunty towards those people, but then again they shouldn't buy stolen bikes, and you are less likely to get hurt by them than by the thieves.
If you don't have proof then there is no point even getting the police involved, which only leaves you with 3 tactics.
1) just take it, preferably with backup. This will almost certainly go wrong, and end up with someone hurt or locked up.
2) pay for it. It probably won't be that much. I probably wouldn't mention it's your bike, that might scare them.
3) ask if you can go for a test ride, and once you are clear of the market just bomb it.
I take no responsibility for whatever you do based on these comments, I'm just telling you your options, personally I would buy it back, assuming the police aren't there.
