Lockring is a must on the road, not so good for track racing on steep tracks.
On the road you'll need to back pedal to slow down and you don't want the rear cod to unscrew and thus give you no braking.
I think on steep wooden tracks not using a lockring protects the track in case of a fall. There may be other reasons, can't remember at the moment.

I was at a track accreditation session at Meadowbank - outdoor wooden track in edinburgh - and i asked about the whole lockring or not thing and whether it was a safety thing and was told that it was simply because different events at the track require different gearing and a lockring just adds to the work to change a cog. Nothing to do with safety or protecting the track.

how do cod screw?
The male inverts himself beneath the female, and the pair swim in circles while spawning.

Is the old hub a fixed hub i.e. stepped threads for cog and lockring, or a road hub, a road hub will not fit a proper lockring, but you can use a BB lockring, it is not as effective as a proper stepped and reverse threaded setup, but is better than nothing.
And if you're riding on the road you do need a lockring.

^ This, i was arguing about lockring use for track only.
I do not advocate riding on the road without a lockring or with a suicide hub no matter how many brakes you have.
need a bit of advice...after fitting a fixed cog onto an old hub, been told both to definately get a lockring, and definately not get a lockring.
Connoisseurs of the wheel world please advise- with explanations?
