What's this lock type called?

  • Hi all,

I'm trying to identify a lock type I used to have on my old bike when I lived in Leipzig, it was on old Diamant or Diamant (can't remember the spelling).

The lock was attached to the back wheel where the brake usually goes as this was a coaster brake which had been retrofitted with a front handbrake to comply with modern German laws. Basically it had a spring-loaded curved bolt which went through the spokes under the hub and into the brake mechanism on the other side and which was released with a key.

I always thought it was a really effective immobiliser and wouldn't mind one for my current/future bike but I have no idea what it's called and never seen one on a modern bike.

    Any help please?

  • Shuttlecock?

  • A BAsta lock maybe ?
Forget about the booster in the picture below.
Most times the 2 parts were welded to the frame.

  • More or less the same as most other AXA locks (SL7, SL9), Trelock, and some others.
Not that popular in UK and DE, but more or less standard on every non-racing and non-MTB bike in NL. Locks have to be attached to frame to get a bike insurance. So, chain and cable locks are just additional, but essential against carry-away theft.

  • Cheers guys,

that's definately what I was looking for!

Anyone knoe if they're much use in LDN against theft? I put down the success of my non-theft down to owning a shitty bike but I might need to beef up security for my new one. I also see the advantage as not having to carry a rope lock in addition to my D.

  • No, they won't be of any use in London. Search for the thread "locks that work" on this forum for some good discussion around locks.

  • Cheers, I saw that lock thread, useful stuff.

  • No worries. Err on the side of caution when locking in London.

  • Dop don't be a dope when it comes to locks.
