So you can share your weight load on the bike, fairly straightfoward isn't it?
As for the handling, fork rake make a huge different in how the bike handle with a front rack, like this Kogswell below;
it's lovely being able to just drop your stuff on the front rack and cycle away, especially in the hot summer's when the last thing you want is to get your back all sweaty wearing a backpack/messenger bag.
