Greetings to you from the North-East.
Can't help with accommodation I'm afraid as I live just outside Newcastle. Good luck with that ;)
Hope to see you on a ride-out or at bikepolo. -

Hey Leigh! i was in the same position last january, and moved to ncl for a year- you're going to love it.
If you need an american-lady opinion, or help sorting out decent places to live/areas to look, i'm happy to help (by satellite, not in ncl anymore, sadly).housing-wise, one thing i wish i knew earlier in the game is that heaton is actually a pretty comfy/residential area to live at a fraction of prices right Inside the city, and its a really easy/flat/straight ride into town. closer to a huge/cheaper grocery store, near parks, ouseburn, two bike shops, etc..
i chickened out on the research, and moved straight to the centre of town for safety/naievetes sake (which was an awesome apartment), but my heart is still in byker/heaton.
also, the kids are dangerous. lived in west philly for 3 years and never ran into quite so many bold, feral, truant kids as i did in the byker metro station.

Byker Metro is a bit - well feral is a good word for it.
I teach at Northumbria as well - we have a decent set up for cycling staff here, with storage, changing facilities and a cycle to work scheme. Which school are you based in?
There is a staff freeads thing on our intranet where people advertise acomodation to other staff - will keep an eye out on it for anything and pass on details etc.
Heaton, Jesmond & Gosforth are very big student areas, with Fenham a rougher, cheaper option. Theres always plenty of accomodation in Newcastle - as well as decent boozers etc. Heaton is probably your best bet though.

Good luck with the move. I'm sure you'll love it here. Plenty to do on or off bikes ! Good luck finding a house. I'd echo Priya's thoughts about Heaton/Sandyford. Really nice area thats a good mix of students/professionals/families and not expensive. Plus, don't know where you're based in america but Newcastle is a really compact city so nowhere is that far away from the centre ! Hopefully meet you soon !
Hellooooo Newcastle!
I am moving across the Atlantic to your humble city in about 2 months to begin my PhD (from the US) and I am looking for some people to ride with and somewhere to live! Anyone need a flatmate starting in August?
Ok here a few pictures of my bikes, so if you see an obviously American girl riding around on these say "hello".....as I don't really know anyone in Newcastle (or England for that matter)! Hope to see you on the streets (or in our new flat)!!
(and yes I realize my track bike has a flat)
