How long after spraying frame

  • .. is it alright to get going again, i have just* sprayed my rear triangle and need my bike tomorrow for polo when is it ok to put the back wheel on and ride off?

*About an hour and a half ago, its been sitting there with a fan on it since..

    thanks.

  • i used to leave mine for about 24 hours in the sun...

(probably not what you wanted to hear, but if it's just the rear triangle you might be able to get away with building back up tomorrow.)

  • Time to turn on the radiator if you do not mind the smell of celulose.
Not to high though, or the paint will craze.

  • yeah man
you need to give it time to settle.
if youve done a couple of layers then the first layer could be dry but the others still wet

  • I leave my freshly painted frames a full week before final sanding and polishing and assembly, but that's me being an ex-painter, and not strictly necessary if it's in a warm place.

You should really leave them for at least 24 hours in a warm dry place, so the fan is a good idea. The only contact area will be the dropouts which get messed up anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Spray your forks and install your brake the next day, when you take it off it'll have squished the paint right down to the frame... stuff's very soft for a long time.

  • +1 to frinkmakesyouthink . . . .

    A hour or so for touch dry . . . . a few weeks until fully cured/hardened.

  • yeah i agree. in the past i have built bike the same day. but they where just bmx's.
i like to leave my own frames for a week, to a little bit longer really just so i know ive not wasted my time with all the stripping and prep work to ruin a good paint job by rushing.

  • Rattle can? 24hrs
Clear coat duco with hardening Agent? 7days
    Brush and roller? immediately

  • Nothing wrong with rollered frames. I did an experiment rollering thinned Rustoleum and with some serious wetsanding and polishing, it looks as good as enamel and is just as tough. 1ltr would be enough for three or four frames.

Took two weeks to cure, takes ages to get enough coats on and gets everywhere, but the finish is good and very tough. Cheaper than powdercoat especially if your nearest powdercoater is 20 miles away on an industrial estate with no transport links... people roller their cars with Rustoleum so there's nothing wrong with it if you're willing to put the work in.
