the copper bits this guy uses seem to negate the need to have a figure for that measurement.

there is a thread on the forum about how to make one with bits from your local B&Q
i'll be damned if i can remember what it was called or who started it -

yea i saw both those designs when i was looking earlier - the 2nd one posted on this forum requires knowledge of the measurement i'm after (to cut the smaller bit of wood to size) -
i was looking in b&q this morning for fittings like the copper ones on the first design but without success - i found some but they looked far too narrow -
i've fashioned my own design and i'm pleased with it ( see pic below). its solid and the washers and press body dont move at all laterally so it should press races in straight - the press body is 43 mm in diameter and i'm hoping that should be near enough to fit inside the races.

oh fuk - i think i got it wrong.
is the frame cup outside diameter sheldon cites below what i am asking for? i just calculated 1 1/8 " = 28.6 mm so 34 mm seems about right for races (proportionate to headtube diameter). that would mean the copper fittings i saw this morning were probably about right.

I know this sounds silly but I used a dumbell with small plates... True story

because i'm enjoying uploading illustrative images here is the mk II - which works :)

Are you gonna try again to buy those copper bits? Were they actually the right size? I'm planning a trip to B and Q soon...
i went back to b&q but the copper reducers they had only went up to 28 mm (i think) so were too narrow. i went on a bit of a mission and found in a plumbing store ones that were 35 mm which would have worked but the guy working there was a dickhead and wanted 6 quid for one- so i told him to stick it up his arse and fuck off (sort of) - the Carson-Press mk II above works perfectly well ;)
:Edit: when i wrote that i anticipated that it would work perfectly well - its really a piece of shit. plastic isnt the best material for these.

sanding off fingertips on the circular sander ....
i'm in the process of designing a headset press for a 1 1/8 threadless set up...
(in before hammmer + wood block)
...and i want to make something that fits snugly inside the outer rim of the races (i.e where the cartridge bearings sit. but i dont have the headset to hand to measure the outer diameter of the cartridge bearings - does anyone know off hand how wide these usually are
no idea if there is a standard but they must all be fairly similar in size...i'm guessing its going to be somewhere between 45-50 mm...
(the headset this is being made for specifically is an M:Part Pro Alloy Aheadset 1-1/8")**
**if the above in not clear i've indicated below in blue what it is i'm after.
