I went up to Herne Hill track today for the Veteran Cycle Club, excellent to see some old bikes flying around the track.
Good to see you all up there even though it was briefly before I dissappeared over to Chris and sign up for a race :DI even gave my Holdsworth Monsoon a bash round the track in the Ancocks Handicap race and All Comers race ;D 8)
My friend Chris Bramley won the Father and Daughter race on the same bike with his daughter Robin 8)

not long been back from the veteran cycle track day and jumble at herne hill,,,,, really good to see so many lovely bicycles and racing on old bicycles.
its such a free for all. anything goes on the track - lack of helmets , front baskets , gears , brakes , under eights on bikes with stabilisers, dresses. there were only a couple of droplets of rain and the jumble was very good, calm relaxed with a few cheap treasures and couple of expensive treats available.
roll on the next one :-) -

God damnit! I wanted to head to a jumble today to pick up some bits, but didn't know this was on, and couldn't be arsed to go into town for LMNH.

behind a sellers stall propped up against his car was a blue bicycle frame with only the chainset, headset and forks attached. confused i could only utter the words "what's that blue thing" it was similar in a way to seeing a famous person that you have admired and mumbling something silly at them. brain to mouth filter gets jumbled. anyway the seller was very kind and took time to explain what it was. i was going to take a picture and forgot. it was one of these

Ben oldridge’s patent was primarily concerned with the riding position of a racing cyclist, ensuring that the rider was as close as possible to being vertically over the pedals and the rear wheel. This entailed a design with a very short wheelbase, and the consequent problems of chain alignment. He also had ideas on a back pedalling brake, a gearbox within the bottom bracket, and a shaft drive. The answer to all these problems was seen by Ben as a twin tube frame, with a longer than usual bottom bracket axle that could accommodate an inboard chain wheel which would move across so that it was always in alignment with the selected rear sprocket.

The Veteran - Cycle Club is an excellent institution. I recommend that anyone with an interest in retro cycling should join it.
tried 'old film' and 'b/w' but the image was even more degraded. i was very impressed with the speed of the penny farthings. the first hour record of 26km was done on one of those and now i'm not so surprised.
