Frame discoloration

so, on the top tube of my white o7 flyer there are 4 yellow-is lines, one running on each quarter of the tube (one top left, one top right and so on). they run about 14cm long and there are darkish patches in between.
the frame is very well used all year round and is quite scratched up and chipped.
the discoloration on the top right of the tube is in the same place where my D-lock sits. I assumed it was the lock leaving the mark until I recently noticed the similar marks on the left and bottom of the tube, where my lock doesn't make contact.

is this rust? if so, are there any tips to containing it or do i maybe need the frame re-finnished?

is this dangerous? could the tube give way and kill my face.

also, Does that fact that each line of rust(?) runs independently and equidistantly from the others seem weird? to me it does but I’m not sure why.

any help would be greatly appreciated as i'm starting to feel a little uncomfortable about it.

    thanks, mediK

  • lbs it is then :)

  • Anything rubbing against it at all? I've had some paint rub off a frame from baggy shorts rubbing.

  • i thought it might be that (from my lock) but it doesn't explain the lines on the botton of the tube... it seems to be "in" the paint as aposed to being on the serface which is why i'm worried...

cheers for the reply though! :)

  • Have you got any grease onto the frame? I've a white frame and there are a couple of small yellowish marks (though not as neat as yours) where I accidently dropped blobs of grease on it.

  • its possible that happened with a greasy rag while cleaning but the chances of getting it in such an exact pattern are slim. I;m glad nobody has mentioned rust yet TBH

does grease usually mark white paint then?

  • Weird.
What kind of stand do you or your LBS use? Any chance theres been a clamp on that top tube?
I was thinking that four symmetrical marks of equal length can be caused by a dirty clamp.

  • yeah i do use a stand at home but don't think it's very dirty.... although i've totally re-built the bike over the last 6 months so the top tube has seem allot of the clamp... man, good shout tarboy, thanks!

  • TARBOY! i think you got it man, thanks. this is my work stand clamp from the side:

the contact points match the marks on the top tube. feel very stupid i didn't think of this but it just didn't cross my mind...

LFGSS is suck a helpful and awesome place sometimes, i love it.

  • cool.
Always put a clean rag around tubing before clamping.
That clamp looks brutal. Looks like some rubber / plastic lining is missing from the jaws.

those sharp edges are freaking me out

  • yep, always do put a clean rag round, but could obviously do with more padding if its marking the tube. the rubber covers over from the edges of the gaw so nothing missing that wasn';t always missing, just a cheeper clamp i supose :)

  • nice genesis btw.

  • cheers dude, took years of mucking about with it but now i rekon its done... which is kinda sad. got my eyes on one of those new gazzettas from WS though... muhahaha. the zero % finace is also a big factor :)
