getting some, tosspot!

It's possible that it's not the pedal or your bike, it might be your knee. Lubricate liberally with cod-liver oil, or just start using the bus.

I had a similar thing with mine. Just squirted a bit of Phils grease under the rubber grommet on the axle, around the clips etc. Re-tightened all the drivechain bits and it went away after a while. I changed the chain around the same time, so could have been a stiff link?

Time ATAC's clicking.
You're going to die. Defo.

So I had this weird click coming from the drive train, and I could feel it through the pedals. I'm running 48/16 so it was strange that the click came every other down stroke on the drive side. (i.e. every two revolutions of the cranks)
Quickly narrowed it down to the chain. It's got one of these quick release links in it:
http://www.freemanscycles.co.uk/images/Chains/kmc_510hx.jpgAnd it's like that link is slightly longer than all the others. When the chain is under tension and that link is coming off the sprocket, it jumps up a little bit, making the click.
Thing is, this has only started happening since I took the chain apart and cleaned it. Have I put the chain back together incorrectly?
I'm guessing I'll just need to get a new chain.
Cheers

Or a new split link would be cheaper than a new chain...
Can't comment on whether you've put it together correctly, but they are fairly straightforward. Pins through the two ends, plate on over the pins, slide the last bit (no idea what it's called) over the pins.

Get a new split link from your LBS for £3 - and ask them to fit it
OR spend £20+ on a new chain
No brainer

• #737
could also be a loose chainring bolt

OR spend £20+ on a new chain
When did KMC 510 chains start costing >£20?

Cheers guys, didn't think about just getting a new link like that.
I thought it looked difficult to get the re-assembly wrong - I just wanted to check I wasn't making some stupid mistake like putting it in upside down or back to front or something like that.
It's deffo the chain, I can see it jump and make the noise

Getting my dredge on again but didn't want to start a new thread....
Am getting an annoying creak from my left crank and would really appreciate any advice if there's something I haven't checked.
Pretty sure it's coming from the crank as I can make the noise by moving the crank arm directly (which should rule out pedals and saddle / seatpost - even though I've regreased them all). It only makes the noise pushing forward - it won't creak if you push it back or squeeze it against the seat post. Have removed and replaced the crank - wear on the BB taper looks pretty even on all four sides. Took out the NDS BB cup (it's a cartridge BB) but that was still nicely greased. I can't make any creaking noise with the right crank.
Was planning on trying the crank arm off my other bike on there this evening to see if that changes it.

Check BB shell for cracks ?
Or the tubes all around the BB shell ? -
• #742
Had a look for cracks in the shell but didn't check the tubes - will have a look at those when I get home. It's a lugged frame so I hope there's no crack hidden away!
Forgot to mention ^ but I did about 300 miles on the bike after assembling it before the creak started.

Just found this link http://cycleseven.org/bottombracket-creakhell - for some stupid reason I wasn't considering chain ring bolts as the creak was on the LHS.... which makes no sense at all. Haven't checked them, so fingers crossed that's the answer....

also it's unlikely the bottom bracket tapers will be deformed, more likely to be inside the crank arm, clean in and out, small film of grease then refit.

Usually is the chain ring bolts. This is the first thing I check now, after having dismantled my whole drive train the first time things got creaky.
My current problem is a click which feels like some kind of bind or stiff chain link. But I'm fucked if I can find either nicked tooth or a malfunctioning link.
The click happens on every pedal stroke, and only when I am out of the saddle or putting the power down™

is it the roberts?
-
• #747
sounds like a bearing problem in the bb.
-
• #748
And yep, it was chainring bolts.
<--------- Stupid boy

is it the roberts?
Nope, the Surly.
sounds like a bearing problem in the bb.
It is a pretty new Campag Veloce, but might make sense. I did manage to sheer the axle of my Phil BB.
My legs are made of steel.

appologeees for posting yet another all too tedious post about mystery clicks, have read through the archive posts but just wanted to see if anyone could tenuously confirm a suspicion. I get a 'kerlick-lick' on every rotation of the left hand crank - so far ive removed the BB, regreased and stuck it back in nice n tight so i suspect that aint it. same with the post, saddle bolt, crank arms and chainring. What i have noticed is that its much more noticable when pushing hard, more so when i angle my foot to the left in the SPD. if i click out and turn with just the right crank it stops alltogether. am i looking at some new SPD's? they're a good 6 years old now so might be time.
cheers
food.
Yeah depending on which type of BB you've got, make sure the BB lockring is tight too.
