  • well how the fuck would it smudge?!

  • Erm, smudged before they put the laquer on?

Who knows what process they go through when spraying them up, could be spray, lugwork, dry (packaging) left it for the next day, laquer?

Take a step back and think.

  • Take a step back and think.

  • it was a rhetorical question! as said earlier luglining is over lacquer.

  • luglined over laquer. packed with bublewrap (particularly well i must add!) before the lugwork had dried, bubblewrap obviously shuffles a bit in transit, along with the bike empty water bottles and other crap they threw in the box. good on em for getting you sorted Rhys, if i'd had paid that for the frame, i would have expected exactly the same kinda service!

  • Thanks for the advice I have found this an interesting read.......... apart from the debate about the merrits........ I have a new frame coming, which after these posts, will be collected in person.

  • Yep that's the way to do it! Fuck snail mail.

  • Ah to be fair it is a very fair point, if you pay money for something which is supposedly a bespoke high quality item you're going to expect it to arrive to you in perfect condition, it's completely unfair of BJ to try and blame these things on customers and it's really bad customer relations..in any business the customer is right and if you want to build up a good name for yourself it's based as much on the quality of your service as the quality of your work...it's just not really good enough to cut all ties with a customer and offer them no follow up service as soon as they've got their money and gotten the box out the door...poor show

  • Although I had no problem with this thread the argument went on for too long and really didn't need dragging up again.

  • This bike was nicked yesterday from my house in Peckham. Please let me know if you see it.

    Cheers

  • Did they break in to your house? wtf?!
Aholes. Am local, will keep an eye out.
    Hope you're insured matey.

  • Sorry to hear your bike got nicked.
On the same topic as the OP though, one of the guys on the Glasgow forum has just got his BLB/BJ frame repainted at BJ and is really happy with the result but he needs a new fork as seemingly the original had different length ends and the wheel sat funny and neither BJ or BLB would entertain him.
Infact there's 3 or 4 guys with BJs up here and as far as i know they all have little niggles with their frames.
Seems to me like if you goto the bother of buying a BJ it's because you're really into your bike and you've decided that you want a Bob Jackson frame (as opposed to someone who is still really into the sport but spends even the same money on a more mainstream or OTP frame/bike because that's easily accessible and requires less consideration) and as such i think the company should be maintaining the highest possible levels of quality and customer service.
Personally i'd love a custom frame and BJ are probably the most realistic but with what iv heard on here and from other owners i think i'd be reluctant to go to them.
This isn't people ruining a business by spouting hatred and bile on the interwebs, it's just how you make a decision about how to spend your money and companies that give poor service need to realise that.

  • They do mate, it's in a different thread where Paul Kirk says he realises there have been some customer service issues and have sort it (him) out.

I think the problems and defensiveness were a long time ago and there are a few posts about them being great. I had a small issue with flux rattling in the tube which is normal, and they couldn't have been nicer about sorting this out. The one guy on the phone was rude but it's been dealt with as I understand.
I wouldn't let reputation get in the way of getting a fantastic frame IMO. I was hesitant but have no regrets now.

  • Cheers, appreciate it. Nah, they didn't break in. The front door was unlocked and they walked in at 3 in the afternoon while my girlfriend was watching TV in the living room, and nabbed both my bike and hers from the hallway. C&nts.

  • I've read all through this thread and thought - "you pay monkeys you get peanuts" . Before everyone starts, I've got a BJ vigorelli. I'm pretty content with it - pretty meaning, the geometrys good - v quick handling, I like how it comes with mudgaurd mounts an ss fittings, although I haven't used them. I replaced the bb the other day and was impressed by the tube miters too. Other than that it's fair. Paint jobs rubbish (the bb flexes so much the paint has started to peel - 1 year old), bb seems to have been threaded / machined off centre?? I run the workshop for a modelmaking buisness - £400 gets you half a days machining / finishing.

Your getting a frame with butted 631 main tubing. So where are they cutting costs? Mercian charge £605 for a very similar f+f. So in summary anyone who thinks that when they're buying an otp vigorelli from Bj they are buying a quality british built frame - don't kid yourself. It's been built to a price point just like most other frames.

Oh and I would of got some meths and rubbed off the smudges and not bothered the busy old (grumpy) men at BJ.

  • "I've read all through this thread and thought - "you pay monkeys you get peanuts" . Before everyone starts, I've got a BJ vigorelli.

Ok, no one's kidding themselves. i/we know there are more expensive frames on the market, custom/handbuilt/etc
but really,BJ are not Create/UniPack their std frame is the price of a complete off the peg.

My point being that you're not paying Peanuts so you shouldn't expect Monkeys...non?
That said, we're also not expecting Diamonds either.. just a well built, solid frame for our slightly inflated pound.

BTW I don't own a BJ! just my opinion like :)

  • i've just read through all the posts..it's taken me 10 minutes. i was propelled along by my curiosity and it's been somewhat entertaining. ahhh. thanks.

  • bb seems to have been threaded / machined off centre??

Sounds familiar. My Vigorelli arrived at the LBS last week with the wrong forks. The correct forks arrived yesterday, they started to build it today only to find that the drive-side BB threads haven't been cut straight.

The whole lot is going back tomorrow and we'll wait to see what they want to do about it.

It doesn't follow from "If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys" that "if you don't pay peanuts, you don't get monkeys." You might get the monkeys anyway. What does follow is, "If you don't get monkeys, you don't pay peanuts."

I just noticed that you said "If you pay monkeys, you get peanuts" anyway. Who knows what happens if you pay monkeys?

  • I thought they wrote the complete works of Shakespeare when you did that?

  • Sharkstar - v sharp :)

  • I think what you are all forgetting is that Bob's staff are all Yorkshiremen and as is their want can come over a little abrupt at times. 'You can always tell a Yorkshireman, but you can't tell im much'.

  • thank you for that timely comment

  • Wow, if only I'd know this in 2008.
