  • Saturday 3rd July is the international day of co-operatives.

Cycle Training UK, which is a worker's co-operative, is planning a big celebration in Brockwell park. We're calling it 'The Cycle Coo' (Website wil go live shortly)

We will be inviting many of the 1000s of people that we have trained to cycle over the years and are planning a variety of cycling events and a picnic.

We would like to give people the opportunity to see some bike polo and even have a go. Seems appropriate as as far as I can tell the London Bike Polo scene has developed and evolved and is run cooperatively.

If you're happy to come and play, help out or even coach some newbies PM me please.

    Thanks

  • PM sent.

  • David, how will be the court?

  • Sounds great... as Rik said, where do you plan on playing in the park?

  • there is an old tennis court i knock around on sometimes, its now used as volley ball, its 'ok' no boards really, but fine for learners.

  • We were going to scout around next week to find locations and do a risk assessment.

We deliver cycle training there regularly and our South instructor team will have some local knowledge so I'll be speaking to them.

Thanks for all your offers of help :-)

  • Local. In!

  • count me in too

  • Ha, interesting picture of Roxy's behind.

Also, the text falls behind the Love Your Bike logo. Just so you knows.

    Cool though.

  • We may change that image to save her blushes and thanks for the comments.

We're still working on the website
    Cheers Wicksie

Here’s some more info about polocoo

Where: Basketball pitch beside the tennis courts, Brockwell Park, SE24 (If you enter from Herne Hill you go through the park, take the path to the right and go past the pavilion, and keep going).
    Map link below
**When: **Sat 3rd July 2010 2-5pm (might be until 7pm – will have to check with the parky)

    http://streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=531613&y=173973&z=1&sv=531613,173973&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf

    What:
We’d like a few games and a couple of taster sessions for people interested.

There’s a few other things going on – CTUK are doing cycle training and Dr Bikes, Bike Ballet are doing a workshop, and possibly some BMX coaching too on the track there.

(You'll have seen that we're using some images that I took at downhams on saturday in the publicity. if you'd rather we didn't use your image, front or behind ;-) , please let me know - Sorry roxy, should have asked earlier)

  • that basketball pitch is awful SD. If you are going to box it in, maybe but the surface is all torn up and it will be a nightmare for people with experience let alone someone learning. The volleyball court is your only real option. Unless they have resurfaced it?/// But still the fence is open at the bottom all teh way around and the ball will just keep going in the bushes. Trust me on this, its no good.

  • I know the pitch near the cafe IS dire...
I understood from my colleague that the pitch below the tennis court is smooth. I'll check that out when we survey the place next week. Thanks for heads up Skoota

  • I'm working in Brockwell Park tomorrow.

The court in the middle of the park by the tennis courts is the one planning on being used isn't it?

Anyway. From memory this court is pretty flat although I haven't walked on it yet. I'll check tomorrow and post it.

  • That would be great PF. (I work with skydancer) The court is the multi court one right beside the tennis courts. It has wire around it but I didn't notice if the wire went all the way to the bottom. The surface looked pretty flat to me when I was there. Cheers

If thats Jean from CTUK (guess it is). I'm Jonathan, we spoke on the phone. Just checked messages and had a couple from you. Sorry, the answer machine is a bit screwed up and Orange don't seem to be able to do anything with it atm.

On another note I spoke with Gabes and he said he'd be happy to sort out the grouping/games runs for the tournament.

  • It is me! (How did you guess). I was wondering about the phone thing. That's great about Gabes. Just to let you know I've also contacted Matt at the LHBPA and they might be able to help.

  • I'm a member of the LHBPA as well and have been on the emailing thats been going around, hance the prompt to check the voicemails.

Anyway. I've packed my camera so will post up pictures of the court tomorrow.

  • hey jeaniejeanjeanjeanjeanjeanjeanjenie bout time you stopped lurking in the nursery and joined the big boys and gals X

  • Right.

Went to the court today and took some photos (then decided to smash my camera against my frame and kill it...)

    Anyway here is the set:

    Quickly:
-the fences have got some pretty big holes under them along one back and corner
-There are two sink holes (presumable for hoops), but these are capped and seem fine.
-The pillars holding the fence looks pretty harsh, not sure but think could be a problem
-there is a massive fence set-in on the court on one side (cord-off)
-the surface seems pretty good through the centre, rolled my ball and was smooth as, there are some poor parts to the side, but not majorly bad just some bumping.

Will put anything else I remember down later. Drinking and sun are a calling

  • it looks really good, for have some games and some tester games for new players I thinks is very good

  • The court you are talking about is basic but fine for beginners, mellow throw ins, etc.
I used to take my kids there for a bit of polo practice.
And take your budgies for a dip in the Lido.

  • Right.

Thanks so much Growup and Rik for surveying the court and taking the pictures, reassuring for us to get your feedback. Will probably pop down there myself next week and happy to meet people there for a chat (and buy you a drink) one afternoon next week. If interested let me know.

We have also ammended the polo images (removing roxy's behind) on our website http://www.thecyclecoo.com/index.html hope people are happy with the images that we have used. Let jeaniejeanjean know if anyone has any issues.

    Should be a fun day!

    Cheers.
