  • I'm off on tour with sorethroat for a few months this summer and basically am looking for everything from bike, racks to bags. Or if anyone could spread their knowledgeable tips and advice as to where to buy and what. This will be my maiden trip on foreign asphalt and never really been touring for as long as planned (6weeks down to Southern Italy through Switzerland back through France) so not sure what to expect. Thank-you!

  • I have nothing I can sell but I cycled from Lake Geneva to Lake Constance. Switzerland has fantastically signposted bike routes - it puts everything else I've seen to shame. You'll love it.

  • sweet thanks man. what kinda bike where you on? whats the possibilities on heavy tourers? big mountains?

best resource on the web for cycle touring. This is why they invented the internet.

  • Ordinary road bikes, plus a trailer, which we took turns on. Out of the 8 days of cycling we only had 3 days of proper climbing.

  • Make your own?

I'd have to second that. if not for resale for the pure fact that you can carry on taking the gear away with you year after year.

  • OP is touring this summer, surely that rules out grobags ;)
I want more grobaggage. Panniers would be unreal.

  • I bought some Carradice Super Cs a few weeks ago. Used them two weekends ago. Perfect. It'd be nice if they had a top pocket (or a small pocket underneath the top flap) but that's not a deal breaker.

The other high-end option is Ortlieb if you want perfectly water proof, but less rugged. I decided (with some gentle advising from Tommy le Brick) that zip-lock bags in a rugged and repairable bag (which is what I did when my girlfriend and I did a tour of the UK/Norway/Denmark in 2003) is better (and probably longer lasting) than a pair of already plasticized bags that, with one spill or moment of riding too close to a tree branch, lose their major selling feature.

  • perfect. i'm waiting on a bike to be delivered then i can start buying the kit! will definatly check the carradices out

  • I also have the Super C's available

  • Bump for Jamie, he is still searching high and low for a bike.
The fool didnt mention on here what size bike he wants - anything between 57-60cm.
Cantis, all fittings etc etc etc

  • As I ve told him, I ve all the fittings, but the frame won't fit

Has he looked at the 22" king of mercia on gum tree ?

  • amazing. slightly out of budget. picked up a dawes galaxy on ebay. just need to get rid of the grip shifters and gel saddle now... thanks for the help though

It is also gone, I called up the guy early in the week.

  • got a rear rack you could have for 15?

  • Thank-you but now have a bike got everything sorted except bar end shifters and brake levers

  • No one has ripped the piss out of the thread title ... what's happening to this here forum?
