Re looking for jobs I reckon sending emails out straight to companies / studios is a good idea.
There's so many factors that come in to play when when it comes to looking for a job. Timing, position, chemistry, money etc etc. So write a good short email, do a good portfolio, and get emailing. Make sure you email the right person though if you can, if you can get a contact through a friend that's worth loads
And like digby said, it costs a fortune to hire someone through a recruiter so if they can be avoided they should.
