  • Anyone got a headset press that I can borrow?

  • yeah.

  • I'm in a mood. I just measured it all up and the steerer is short. Not just a little bit short but a whole inch short. Not only that but the reason I took off the old headset (Tange) was that it was loose on tightening nut and loose on the fork crown - I pulled it off by hand. It's not looking good.

Might still need to borrow this but need to call someone like Mercian to see what is involved in replacing the steerer tube :-( If it involves repainting, and I can't see how it won't, then I will be even further depressed.

  • Ok. Hope you get it sorted, gimme a shout if you still need press.

  • Well doubt and lingering frustration got the better of me this evening and I whacked the cups in with a mallet but it confirms what my measuring was telling me that the fork is cut too short. I think I needed to get the bashing it with a mallet part out of my system to come to terms with the fact that I will have to throw money at it.

If it wasn't a decent frame I'd find another fork and rattle can it but it's worth saving.

  • Ah, but... nice frame = pics please! P.s. DId you cut the fork yerself?

  • No. Previous owner, when they had been drinking and with a hatchet by the looks of it. I've cut a couple of forks in my time so I know it's not exactly difficult to cut one straight or to the right length.

Here's a pic of the whole bike. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4067/4541816776_64f96b182a_d.jpg

  • Nice looking bike. Hope it's sorted easily.
