No, it shapes itself round the cog. As long as you are careful when removing it nothing should be left behind. Just unwind it in the opposite direction it went on.
When I greased or cleaned chains otherwise they always seemed really gritty and crunchy afterwards. With this method that doesn't seem to happen.
