A Brompton is like any compromise: it doesn't do both ends of the spectrum as well as stuff that is designed without compromise. So a Brompton, even a fixed Brompton, is no match for a proper fixer. But a proper fixer doesn't fold up really small. However, for a reasonable bike that you can keep in the hall without tripping over it, sling in the back of a car, carry on the train and tube and get in the office lift with, a Brompton can't be beat.
I don't get the large ladies analogy. Maybe some female LFGSS users will understand.
