I am currently in Jersey visiting family and helping to sort out funeral arrangements for my grandmother who sadly passed away recently.
While I'm here, I thought it might be nice to take some photos and talk a little about how great Jersey is for cycling! Sadly I'm not with bike at the moment but I'll probably borrow one (I'm here for 10 days or so).
For those of you who don't know, Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands (see [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey"]here[/ame]). Half of my family grew up here, and I've had the pleasure of visiting it almost every year of my life thus far.
The roads are marvellous for cycling. Most are fairly narrow and tree-lined with high hedges right on the edge of the road, so care must be taken, however most of the island has a 40mph speed limit which goes a long way to make you feel fairly safe.
First off, I was out in st. Helier (the islands only town of any real size), and was pleasantly surprised to discover that there is a LMNH/Rapha pop-up-shop equivalent here, called Big Maggy's Cafe. It's pretty nice with plenty of roadie porn on the walls (and floor, and propped up next to the couches, tucked away behind the counter!). Didn't have chance to stop for long, but it seems to be brand spanking new, equipped to deal with big spenders and coffee drinkers, and also general bicycle repair (I had a poke round the corner and was very surprised to find a very spacious and well stocked workshop).
According to their website it's run by two keen cyclists based in Jersey, and exclusively serves Magnus Backstedt's own coffee blend! Hence the name big maggy. Schweet!
Here's a quick picture I took (sorry about the poor quality):
More to come - might try to document a few rides around the island - will see how i get on and whether this ridiculous weather holds out.
