Having bought a lovely Airlite rear hub for a vintage track frame I am building up in proper vintage glory, I've come a bit of a cropper looking for a rear rim. I don't want to run tubs as I am actually hoping to get this bike out on the road quite a bit and I'm not into the kerfuffle of changing tubs when I'm out there.
Which leaves me with a dilema - the only 40h rims which appear to still be being made are for tandems, with the narrowest being either
Rigida Sputnik
Mavic A719
These both have the same issue - they take only tyres from 28c upwards, and are both available only in black. In the US the Sun Rhyno appears to be available but it suffers the same issue of width, plus I can't find one of the buggers over here...
At the moment, I'm considering using one of the above, sanding down to bare metal and polishing, but I don't know if this is the ideal solution, plus it means running the quite fat 28s at the back (and the front probably won't fit a tyre much above a 20, so I'll look like a bloody drag racer with huge rear tyres and skinny front ones)
Does anyone know of any other 40h rims available, either new or second hand? Campyoldy is shut, Hilary hasn't replied to my messages... any other ideas where to get one from?
I am really keen to use the airlite as it is simply a thing of great beauty, and it really suits the nice 110mm spaced vintage track frame I have... Any thoughts, anyone?
