Some of that hi-fi stuff really is magical thinking - does anyone remember those green felt tip pens that were sold - you were supposed to carefully draw a line around the edge of your CD's, and it would make them sound better...
I once sat in on a blind test with some studio engineers, with two identical pairs of monitors, one wired up with very, very expensive speaker cable and the other with ordinary mains cable (about 1 sq mm cross section as I remember). No-one could tell any difference at all.
