Fitting Tubs to Shamals

Posted on
  • I've just bought some shamal tubs (road) and want to start using them.

I'm a little unsure if i need tape to cover the nipple holes and valve extensions.

I'm not asking about different brands, i just want to know what exactly i need to get rolling.

    Thanks very much,

(Apologies if i've missed anything, studying previous threads has proved unfruitful)

  • You don't need to cover the nipple holes, just use tape or glue and the base tape will keep the tub from filling the holes. Not sure what you mean about the valve extensions though?

    If you've not fitted tubs before then I'd recommend this thread over on weightweenies, it's full of sound advice;

  • Thanks a lot,

nice to know about not needing to cover the holes.
All i mean by 'valve ententions' is: are shamals so deep that i wont be able to access the valves?
now time to swot-up weight on weenies

  • You can buy valve extenders that screw into the existing valve to allow you to pump air into the tyre. A lot of tubs come with extended valves as standard now though, as most carbon rims are deep section.

  • Glue is cheap. Tubs, well at least good quality tubs, are not.

  • Ok, this all makes sense so far, your comprehensive advice finds good soil, thank you...

I just have one more question, i've bought some vittoria rally tubs for the shamals,
I'm pretty sure the tubs don't have removable valve cores for valve extensions (as the rims are deep).
Do i need to get some tubs with removable valve cores, and if so/if not, what length extensions do i need?

Any advice will be humbly received

  • You can get valve extenders that fit over the top of the existing valve precisely for those tubs without removable cores.

I can't remember how deep Shamals are off the top of my head, but somewhere between 40 and 50 mm? Any extender longer than that should do.

  • jambon looks on evanscycles for pocket-sized version of andyp
    thanks fella

  • some vittoria tubs looks to not have removable valves but the whole thing unscrews at the base.
But at andyp said, valve extenders that fit over the top will work also

    thanks fella

    That's quite a good likeness

  • Don't get these. The plastic is piss poor. I snapped four before I realised the metal ones without the cave are infinitely better.
