Lockring broken?

Posted on
  • I just took my old frame to a bike shop that I don't quite trust but have little choice but to go to as it is the only one which has an English speaking mechanic. I have a bottom bracket that has stuck and the plastic lockring's teeth have all broken off so I can't remove it. I took it to them and he said that the whole frame is 'to be thrown to the bin'

Is this really true or are there secret methods that he can't be arsed to do as he'd rather sell me a new one? Just had a really pissed off evening after realising that the parts he sold me today are completely the wrong size for my bike too, so I've decided not to go back to him anyhow and to deal with communication problems in other shops.

  • No its not true and yes |think he would rather sell you a new bike or frame or whatever.

You will need to remove the old bottom bracket destructively. Luckily for you that you have plastic lockrings.

try to remove them by unscrewing first. Give it all a good squirt with penetrating oil and try and get a grip on them to turn them. (gland pliers, chain whip or anything that might work.)

If you cant turn them then you can get really heavy handed: Get a narrow chisel or a screwdriver and chop all the way around one of the lockrings. Then hit the axle hard from the other side to bash it through the ring you have just cut.

Finally carefully cut the rings out with a hacksaw blade trying not to damage the threads or that will cost you the price of a bike shop retapping your bb (no biggy but just extra expense)

    Good luck

  • Thanks - I thought he was talking crap. Now I have to give it a go
