Olaf, some papaver rhoeas please?
I think the soil in my beds is fucked, too many years of artichokes and not a lot else in them seems to be sapping and wilting any new plants as soon as I put them in. I got given some top soil last week, so might start doing tubs to grow some proper veg next week. The only saving grace to a late season.
Richey, you were meant to be bringing me some beans or courgettes for the WMD no?
Your soild should not be "fucked" if it has had plants growing in it, like some healthy artichokes for example. Soil loses nutrients and becomes acidified if it is left bare, with nothing on it.
If your having persistent problems growing stuff it may be worth doing some soil tests.
But if this stuff has failed recently, it couldve just been the weather. Theres been fairly chilly/windy weather & night frosts recently.

the new additions this year are a fig tree
Tip for you:
If you restrict its root growth by either planting in container or lining the hole in ground with slabs, it will force the plant to fruit during the first/second year.
Otherwise the plants can keep growing till they cover a whole building yet not have a single fruit.

I've got a gazillion broccoli seedlings. If anyone wants some, let me know. I'm in WC1.
There are two types: Purple Sprouting and Romanesco. (Though to be honest, you may get a mystery broccoli as I've slightly lost track of which is which in some pots.) -

Snowy - yes. Bronxley drinks?
Lethal- it's potted.
Sam - sure.

Yep. some people grow potato plants for a couple of seasons to get the soil back up to pep.

Tomatoes actually like it dry, if you water them while fruit is ripening youll get poor flavour.
If your plants are fairly big and sturdy at the time you are leaving, and they are not in a container/growbag they should be fine.
I would just make sure that youve pinched them out fully before leaving.
Cool - thanks for the tip - I don't think I did well with pinchign out last year until the final crop. These will be in a grow bag so I'll reassess the situation nearer the time.

No probs. Not sure the best way to get them to you. If you'd like you could PM me your address I could stick them in an enevelope. Otherwise coudl meet up somewhere central - I work in Victoria if that helps.

you need to pinch the suckers out from the start. you want to have one main stem, and the fruit coming off that.

I've just acquired a roof terrace (outside space at last) and would love some tomatoes so this thread is perfect. Any tips for other things to grow in containers on a roof terrace?

Lovely, I'm down the road in Vauxhole, so can come up to meet you easily.
Can I rave about Roots and Shoots in Kennington here too? Horticultural centre training NEET youths and selling some of the produce to the public. Does a great apple pressing day at the end of the summer too.

DFP - ta, I think you're probably right about the soil tests - the honeysuckles I transferred this week have gone limp, so back to the garden centre for me.

Top stuff. I'll try and remember to bring some in tomorrow - will 100 do - or would you like more?
I'm not on my bike tomorrrow so the offer of a chilli plant still stands (to everyone else as well).
If I don't forget to bring them I'll PM you my number and arrange a meet at lunchtime or something whenever is convenient?
thanks too for the Roots & Shoots heads up - I'll keep an eye out for their next open day. Back in the day I used to volunteer at Brockwell Community Gardens. R&S looks like how I sometimes wished BCG would turn out.

Perfect, I need to brave a branch of Salamader or whatever Abbey National is called nowadays, so the nearest easy one to me is Victoria. 100 is more than enough, and I'd love to take some chillis, in return for a share of the peppers once they've grown?
R&S is much more of a "professionally run" charity now, Linda who's been managing it for years Is quite an inspirational character in a very laid back way, and since their new eco building was built their presence and reputation has increased. That and they’ve got beehives and a dragon!
And BCGis a big of a different fish & I think their "turn up and dig" approach works for some people and not others. It's still good for a stroll though and their summer veg is always good.

You can keep the chillis - I always go overboard with them and still haven't managed to finish off last years crop. Oddly enough because of the cold snap a few of the plants that didn't die in the snow (I forgot I'd left them out) have already flowered and are producing again.

I liked BCG, I liked it a lot (and many of the people there) but the constant infighting was slightly depressing - I just got on with digging etc and tried not to get involved. I think things were changing by the time I moved away so it might be different.

I haz specialized in fruit tree pruning/reshaping for fruit if anyone has an overgrown fruiter that needs thinning out to fruiting ends. Done a fair few thinning outs on apples that produce too much and end up rotting on the tree
Depending on size and if I can do it on a weekend, will do in return for tea/veggies etc. Not the best time of year for it but i'm here if req.
Need to get my roof on the grow now.... -

Ta, just emailed back.
I'm still at a loss as to what I've done to my new bedding plants. They were fine last week in a different garden, they're with most of the soil that they came across with, but are dying. It's not the cold as it's not been that cold lately, and they were coping fine in their previous home, and they've had a water and a feed after dusk each day.
This is worse than bicycles.
On the plus side, the new home made chiminea from an old boiler worked a treat last night and also has the added benefit of sending up lovely sparkly iron filings when you kick it.
