I'm presuming you mean taper gauge??? as opposed to straight gauge?? If so, UTFS for "butted" tubes, and there is reams on the interweb- for steel and ally which is joined by brazing and welding it's mostly about having enough thickness at the ends to make a good strong safe joint, while keeping the weight down a bit, making the tube slightly more flexy (stiffness is proportional the the difference between the ext and internal diameters, raised to the 4th powers respectively IRRC)
If you mean "taper" as in the external diameter of a stay changing over it's length then its complicated.....
