you should have asked him to wire transfer the money to a friend first, then show you a copy of the receipt to clarify that he actually has the funding - after that, no more action needed from his part for his convenience.
well, next time. bad luck mate. i hope he'll sort that out. let's give him the chance to come forward and resolve the prob - if it's his dad's card, he may not be able to check for the refund easily.
