I doubt door knocking will produce any results. Have a look along the likely route to and from the scene of accident for cctv. If there are any details of the vehicle involved it should be possible to spot it should any footage be available. It should equally be possible to narrow it down to a small number of vehicles from time details such as 999 calls.
