Don't rush it. You will end up buying a whole bike for £500 to find out, that you don't like the frame and the parts are not what they seemed to be.
If you build it yourself for the same money, you can always change every single component until you get something you will be comfortable with.
Buy and sell 2nd hand.

Just be faster when you want to buy 2nd hand...
