you should be able to relax, that is when you start spinning properly, it all feels calm, fluid and easy - you have achieved a decent speed, the pedals are not being pushed so much as just topping up the speed to keep you moving
this is one of the beautiful things about riding fixed
this ability to relax is even more important when spinning down a hill, i tend to find its best to activate the core control and then my legs can do cartoon style circles

Anyway, I'd add that hammering it out of the saddle can be a bit tricky. I discovered the painful way, that whereas I can spin fast both standing and sitting. Somewhere imbetween my legs dont turn so well.
Just remember to not stop pedalling.
The only time I've had trouble with this is riding the drops really hammering it and then thinking I can relax.. YOU CAN'T!
Also hill climbing is really rewarding when riding fixed, I probably enjoy it as much as riding geared.
