  • Just received my fixed + belt bike, first short ride this morning to go to work in paris. will post further review, but first impression is it is a very smooth ride, no slack whatsoever. And amazingly silent.

I remember I test rode one of the trek districts after my last bike got purloined. It was quiet and smooth, but something about it didn't feel right - almost too smooth...

    I like chains.

  • yep too smooth for me. I rub salt water and grit into my chain to make it really crunchy.

  • Done some search in the Google of the World, and Phils' is the best I can find.

  • For fixed that's the best.

    But it's heavy as hell.

For singlespeed the Chris King appears to be the best.

  • Why don't you get some Mavic Open Pro and laced them to the existing hubs?

the difference would be much more noticable.

  • That's not a problem, get some cheap Tiarga (or system ex/formula et all) front hubs and bob your uncle.

Also the strength of the wheels lie in the quality of the wheelbuild, not the rims itself, but if you're going to ride everyday, 32h is plenty, not that 16 holes isn't, but it's best to be safe than sorry.

  • Didn't realise they were making thread on pulleys now.
I'v had my District for about a year and a half now and it's probably had the belt on it for about half that time.
I switched it out for a chain and cogs to alter gearing to use it for polo and rebuilt the rear wheel with a standard Deore mtb disc hub so i could use a 6bolt cog with the chain to make the bike fixed but found the bb height extremely low so it's now back to belt drive freewheel.
I got some belt line issues with the original hub (narrow singlespeed specific freehub body) that gave me a bit of noise if i pedaled hard but since switching to the Deore hub that has a larger freehub body and thus, more adjustability, the noise has gone.
Love the belt, was great when i was out with mate the other night who was complaining about the wet weather ruining his new NJS track chain. I just laughed at him.

  • wet weather ruining chain?!

  • wet weather ruining chain?!

i went through 3 last winter. gotta be a connection somewhere

  • well, the connection is just look after your chain regularly.

  • It was more the fact of he fitted a new chain expecting the recent good weather to continue and 2 or 3 days later, gets caught in rain.
    Whatever.

  • well, the connection is just look after your chain regularly.

    I oil Sir Scoble, often.
At £2 per chain it's just cheaper to replace them.

  • I don't even oil, I just clean them with a rug and brush off the dirt that got clogged up inside each chain link.

  • Dylan, could the fact you are going through chains that quickly be because you are buying £2 chains?

Didn't even know chains could be had for £2.

I use £15 Wipperman chains and they easily last all through winter (they don't rust though due to materials). I use the bike through mud, water etc,. and Muc Off the whole bike once a week and clean and oil the chain.

  • well, the connection is just look after your chain regularly.

i go through at least two a summer, and they are the tough kmc kool chains.
cleaned and oiled regulary THEY STRETCH*
you obviously don't ride enough in the winter, Ed.

    *quack!

  • I do one chain a year. Fresh one in the Spring, keep it fettled all year, let it turn to shit in Winter with the wet and salt, replace when the daffodils pop up.

    Lovely.

  • Yes, miles ridden would need to be know rather than just saying "I replace once a year", "I replace twice a week" etc,.

Admittedly I don't ride that many miles (around 3000 per year) as those miles are solely for pleasure as I don't commute by bike and I get through 2 chains a year.

  • 100+ miles a week then?
