  • are there any particular reasons why you want a titanium frame?
    {the following observations are just my personal opinion, a lot of people will disagree}
    titanium isn't as stiff as steel or alloy (for the same dimensions) so needs to be oversize to get a frame that doesn't ride all noodly,
    the bike for life thing is a myth, ti frames fatigue and break just like other frames only they are more expensive to repair.
    a lot of ti frames are plain gauge, the multi butted frames will be lighter and ride better (if the framebuilder is a good one who understands the metal and how it can be manipulated to get the best out of it) i would rather save up for a better frame or buy something in steel than have a plain gauge chinese/russian frame where the builder is a welder not a frame builder, when having something made by an expert frame builder you are paying not just for the product but all the knowledge gained from building a fair few hundred frames and the feedback gained from racers and riders. builders like pegoretti, rourke, richard sachs, sacha white, darren chrisp. kent eriksen, crumpton etc are the kind of builders i would look at.
    i'm surprised that people are prepared to pay £2k plus on a framebuilder who is new to working with a material or has no long list of satisfied customers and racers

    if you are really set on ti then i would look at enigma at the cheaper end then eriksen, baum and crisp
    if you can only stretch to a plain gauge chinese/russian frame then i wouldn't bother, get an oversize tigged steel frame from rourke or a fillet brazed or tigged enigma. columbus spirit and deda eom/zero replica the tubesets of choice. oversize steel is nothing like 531 lugged stovepipe

    also i would say don't be so set on custom if a manufacturer offers proper sizing in 1 cm increments then custom sizing shouldn't be necessary unless you are a really odd shape or lack flexibility. i'm a bit surprised to see 'custom' frames with shit loads of spacers under the stem, this just makes the front feel bendy why not just have an extended head tube? i just have one 2mm spacer and i definately notice the difference against other bikes (a good fork helps too).

    spending all your cash on the frame and nothing left for a decent fork and set of wheels? fail.

    you should try to swing your leg over a few different bikes of all materials you may find your conclusions regarding material are not what you expected.

    ignore everyones advice. buy something shiny that makes you feel warm inside no matter how it rides.
