I raced on a disc equipped cross bike last season. Most cross races are not UCI sanctioned and it's only National Trophy level races in the UK which are so for the vast majority of cross races discs are permitted.

My dad's never been Arkansas cyclocross champion though so what do I know?

yeah i agree with what everyone is saying, we all have good points. especially the one about having to spend a wedge on a cross bike and not racing it! as for the Arkansas cyclo cross it is more than probable that the rules could be different over there for disk brakes.
