• alright then, can someone tell me if it's possible to have 2 brake levers going in to one calliper? I don't mean that I'm planning to connect left and right lever to the same calliper, but have say a normal drop handlebar and a bmx stylee one too.

    can it be done?

  • you should be able to find cyclocross levers that the cable can pass through.

like these, but not necessarily carbon ;)

  • crosstop levers. i have one on my condor (with a hood lever) available from salsa, cane creek, tektro and specialized.

  • Sheet, I only just saw a brake "lever" that does this, its a single handlebar mount that sit's near the stem, with two levers, one for each side and they both pull the same cable, specially designed for safety-conscious fixsters....think it was dia compe.

but yes, cross bikes have two levers which both pull the same brake, so it can be done.....not sure if there is two inners in one outer, or two independent cables, think it is the former.

One inner, outer slightly longer and cut in two to insert cross lever. (The cross lever pushes the cable outer down, rather than pulling the inner up, which is why it's a bit spongey).

  • freakin' genius! thanks guys...

  • Bumped for eyebrows...

I tend to run two levers and one is just not connected or a phantom lever.
I am assuming you mean 2 normal road hoods and not a cyclocross pass-thru style?

There's some info about TT setup here:

You can also get 2-into-1 brake levers (i think opposite to what you want):
    http://www.ihpva.org/Projects/tstrike/building/2into1.htm

This is probably what you want:

Also see this thread for a bunch of stuff:
    http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-328132.html

This is a pretty nice off the shelf solution.

Anyway, hope that gives you some idea of what you can do.

  • there seems to be a marmite situation here. i love them but there's not discussion anywhere. thoughts? pro's and con's?

  • Why?

  • They are shit. Ride with flat bars / risers if you don't want drops.

  • They are just stupid with drops.
think about where your hands should be most of the time, the hoods and the drops, and only on the top when climbing or resting, both of which you don't require breaking.
Putting the levers there is just stupid, there are no pro's.

  • waits for mdcc to come along and tell you how wrong you are

  • I decided on balance that there were not enough pros for my kind of riding, as the cross top levers get in the way of holding the tops for climbing. They remain popular with cyclocross riders and people doing more technical off road stuff than I do on drops, because the tops position moves the CG back compared with either drops or hoods, which is handy when you're braking on steep downhill sections. They are probably most effective with wide bars, which again is a compromise I found I couldn't live with, otherwise the grip on the tops is too narrow.
