Ok I can pay a bit more than £100 but I really do need something sooner rather than later. As long as it is fully functional and includes everything I need.

Reco off Ebay?

Certainly a possibility but I really could do with some help in choosing!

I just bought one of these. A bit more than you were looking to spend but it is worth the extra.

That seems like an excellent deal! But really I'd like a man size screen...

Good luck, with the budget you have.

Having looked on Ebay I think your right! It's either something big old and basically crap or something small, newish with a good spec.
Asus seem to be good value are they ok?

just to let you know if your going for a small one, they aren't really laptops, they're netbooks and if you're planning to do more than just browse the web they really aren't worth going for. For programmes(like photoshop, word etc they're really slow and frustrating to use. I found out the hard way having bought one of the supposed good ones and it being shit. I think I saw a 7 year old macbook for a hundred on here a couple of days ago which despite its age would be a far better option than a netbook

Well the I'm using an Asus netbook now, and its a higher spec than my old Dell "standard" laptop, and faster and the Dell was only 2 years old.
-
• #11
that must be some netbook, do you run many programmes on it ??
-
• #12
Windows XP SP3, full MS office pack, Adobe full reader player pack, Photoshop, Matlab, MS Security Essentials (very good), Skype, IE 8, and it runs for 8 hours on one charge.
Its a great little bit of kit. I bought 15 of them my team at work and found it so good that I bought a personal one. -
• #13
hah well people obviously feel differently, but I can only speak on personal experience and I would recommend just going for an actual laptop instead
-
• #14
But the new generation netbooks are just that, laptops, only smaller with greater endurance.

Argh! Choosing something is harder than I thought! My missus really doesn't want a little screened thing so I'm erming towards an older laptop as it is just to browse the web and perhaps access pics on an external hardrive it doesn't need to be all that anyway.
What about something like this?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CHEAP-Dell-LAPTOP-1-8GHZ-256MB-40GB-CD-WiFi-WIN-XP-14-/150437542982?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Computing_Laptops_EH&hash=item2306c6bc46Is refurbed a good or bad thing? Is it kinda like a salvaged repaired thing or does it give me some reassurance that it will serve me well for a reasonable amount of time?

Hi Tel my laptop is an Asus F3s http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=cFnihROoACbFXkX2
It has the 1.6ghz dual core, and 200 gig of ram. It is way, way better than that Dell. Anyway, it is a ok laptop, I just now have a macbook pro. I think 140 is quite a long way below market value, what do you think forumongers?

Boom! I'll take it :)
I was just awaiting a reply from you regarding the screen size and because I am a complete PC noob I wanted to look into it all a bit more seriously.
PM on it's way.

Up to you, but you will find 256 meg of ram very tiresome.

if Tel don't take it - i might!
I haven't got the cash right now but very soon I'd like a s/h laptop. Nothing flash just something to browse the net and access my external hardrive. Obviously the newer and better spec the better. Budget is just £100'ish though and will require delivery.
WHY? Please don't take advantage of a technology noob.
