  • We are currently conducting some research on behalf of TfL on cycling habits around London with the aim of improving safety and building confidence in navigating the streets of the city.

This is a great opportunity for you to influence the way that London accommodates cyclists and we feel that your experiences will be particularly beneficial.

Please complete our online survey (link given below), which will require no more than 20 minutes of your time to complete. To thank you for your participation, you will also be entered into a random prize draw to with a chance to win £50 of store vouchers of your choice.

The survey can be reached via the following link:

    https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/J93TMK6

We are also conducting a really exciting piece of research which you may like to take part in which will involve cycling between pre-determined points within London, with an onboard camera and GPS to record information on the journey. For those participating in this part of our research, we will be able to offer £30 for your time. If you are interested in participating in this part, please email cyclewayfinding@arup.com and we will provide further details.

Many thanks in advance for your help

  • Done very long, but done.

  • Done.

  • done pffff not a single question that lets you give your own opinion only multiple choice, and very suggestive questions....

  • not important
    D
    most of the time
    paper maps

  • Done - do wonder how much of this wonderful project is already completed by the suggestive answers, I rather felt they wanted me to confirm what they've already done, rather than listen to what I've got to say............

  • I hope to win £50 to spend on public transport becuase the roads aren't safe

  • Really tedious. Gave up 3/4s of the way through.
    Agree with Digby.
I'd be happy to type my opinions and suggestions to questions. I realise you can't correlate or tot-up individual answers, but I'd be far more willing to spend an hour doing it than 20 mins doing this.

May give it another go later, as I feel these things are important.

  • done, didn't think a lot of it related to me, but there you go.
japseye, don't start it, if you can't finish, that gives them no information at all.
    hoping it helps out.

  • done pffff not a single question that lets you give your own opinion only multiple choice, and very suggestive questions....

Read it and came to this conclusion. Why not contact tfl to tell them your opinion. Ill get the email address for people to complain/comment

I just felt if they had tried to get more qualitative data, not just quantitative they might also find more innovative and new idea's instead of just testing the idea's in their own paradigm.

But in retrospect that's a different research topic.... will stop talking in circles. (sorry)

  • Thanks for your feedback everybody, I'm sure you understand that there are inherent difficulties with research of this kind.

There is a qualitative element to this research:

    Thanks again

  • Certainly. Hope I didn't appear rude. Gathering information about people's cycling habits and redesigning roads and reeducating motorists and cyclists is incredibly important.

Am going to give this another crack at lunchtime and will get in touch via email about the practical part of the research.

Good job for being proactive on this. I hope things change for the better.

  • May I ask if the cycle superhighways are included in your survey? As they are promoted as safe and fast routes for cyclists, shouldn't you wait until these are in place to receive more feedback.

I am a bit worried that my answers to this survey could lead to more paint on the roads.

  • done.

Is it really possible to keep a cap on which places are more dangerous to park your bike than others?

surely if there' sno bikes parked in the dodgy area bike thieves will just move on to another area?

I think they may already have..have you seen our commute this morning?

+1 Equally worried about any more signage appearing on our streets. That is really the last thing we need.

  • I hope there's no nodder speed ETA signposts. I think the TFL maps are going to be covered in all kinds of crazy crap now.

    Googlemaps and street view FTW!

  • +1 Equally worried about any more signage appearing on our streets. That is really the last thing we need.

I understand paint entirely, but surely signage that gives directions and points to cycle routes is helpful? Or am I missing something?

Edit: Yeah, times on signposts aren't useful at all.

  • yeah, this was so aimed at novices who are scared of the road nothing I had to say could be of benefit to the survey, so I gave up half-way through.
One gets the impression that the whole approach is wrong-headed. What we don't need is more fucking signs, orders for cyclists to go a different way to the one they want to go to, more paint, more hi-viz and helmets, and more reinforcement that roads are for motorists and cycling is dangerous. Which seems to be the industry that is building itself up around TfL and cycling.

What we need is to ban HGVs from zones 1 & 2 at rush-hour, get strict liability brought in, and educate pedestrians to look before they cross the damn road.

Nothing in the survey about that.

  • Will they get rid of any potholes?

  • BlueQuinn for Mayor!

If youd like a non-local to do this to represent london visitors, Id be up for this. Ive never cycled in london before.

  • I really hate to be negative, as I should welcome efforts to improve things for cyclists, but TL:DR.

I got a few pages in, got pissed of with the suggestive questioning, and tired of saying the same thing over and over again.

Sorry, I usually try to be positive, but that was just crap.

This (although I'd be nicer about the pedestrians).
