Can this just be retro-fitted onto my BLB track frame? Or are there clearance issues over the depth of cogs etc?
I'd love a silent grease free drive train :)

The belts can't be split/broken like a chain can, so you need some way of getting the belt to go through your rear triangle. This is done by getting a S&S coupling fitted (google it if you don't know) or some such other jiggery pokery.

Jesus, that looks over-complicated.
I'll leave it!

Love those guys. Posted this a few pages back. Bike nerd heaven :)
http://www.lfgss.com/post1205851-156.htmlManaged to put some off-road km's on the beltdrive now. Pretty impressed. It doesnt feel much different to a well maintained chain TBH. It does keep this feeling despite being caked in shite from soggy semi-frozen trails, though. My bike looked like I'd found it at the bottom of a swamp when I got home last night. Yet the drive chain felt the same as when I left the house.

sorry about the repost. A lot of guys I've met use it on unicycles
How does it cope with grit and little stones etc... ?
Would you need to change the belt often or is that not a problem at all? -
• #365
Not exactly a repost was it?
Anyway. The belt should last several times longer than a chain. Small stones did'nt seem to be a problem. I live in Norway, and the roads are currently covered in loads of gravel, and dust (powderised tarmac from studded tyre usage) from winter. I did'nt expect a problem riding to the trail (all was dry), but did wonder how the system would cope with being grungey, while riding through gravel, on the way home. Felt just as smooth.
Reading the literature. Nobody has claimed it to run better than a newly serviced chain. Just that that this smoothness lasts, whereas your chain will get gritty after a while. Sounds spot on to me.

Just seen this; Lexus hybrid 'concept'. Actually built and going to be shown, available for test in the UK soon.
Shimano 8 speed interal rear hub attached to awful cranks and a 240W electric motor, via a 25.9V Lithium-ion battery.
Awful cranks.

Lexus as in the car maker lexus?
-
• #368
Yup.
They're main car sales come from hybrid cars in Europe so they are now doing anything that means producing a hybrid. PR Innit.

Bleargh. Didn't Porsche design bikes a while back? Some really fucked up MTBs or was that BMW?

Both, i think.
Car manufacturers (especially 'premium brands') like assosiations with sports. The also like it when that sport has supporters or enthusiasts who spend lots of money on said sport. This includes golf, polo, sailing & now cycling.

Should be OK, Harley Davidson have had bands instead of chains for years, and even you don't put out as much torques as a Harley.
You should produce considerably more torque than a stock Harley, which is in the 100Nm range. My body weight (with shoes etc) on a 165mm crank is about 130Nm and I can probably get that up to over 150Nm by pulling on the bars.

Just received my fixed + belt bike, first short ride this morning to go to work in paris. will post further review, but first impression is it is a very smooth ride, no slack whatsoever. And amazingly silent.
